When I graduated from high school, I was a slim 125 pounds. I was active and played sports all throughout school. Then, I started my first job which had me sitting all day long. I was also in school, so I sat there for several hours a day too. To be honest, I never really liked working out, so I used that as an excuse to basically become a ‘couch potato.’
Fast forward to 2011: I was tipping the scale at 215 pounds and was miserable.I was tired all the time and could barely function to get through the day. My diet consisted of sugar, sugar, and more sugar. I was spiraling out of control. I had tried all kinds of diet and exercise programs and nothing ever really worked. Then, in November of that year, my doctor had a serious talk with me about my health. If I didn’t do something about it, I most likely wouldn’t be around in 10 years. This was the wake-up call I needed.
The weekend after Thanksgiving, I began the journey to change my life. I started a diet that is based on fresh meats, fruits and veggies and excluded processed foods. Basically, my doctor had prescribed the Paleo diet. I also started doing CrossFit workouts during my 15 minute breaks at work. I worked my way up to doing CrossFit workouts 4-5 days a week during my 15 minute breaks, and also started running after work 4-5 days a week.
When Nick and Rebecca opened Ute CrossFit in April 2012, I was excited but also a little scared. I was not really sure if I would be able to actually survive an hour long CrossFit workout, but was willing to give it a try. The workouts were tough but I got a sense of accomplishment in being able to do the movements even when they were scaled to my abilities. I started looking forward to coming to CrossFit. Every day people were cheering me on and I was able to do things I never thought possible.
To date, I have lost 75 pounds and gone from a size 18 to a size 6. More important than the weight loss, however, has been how amazing I feel. I feel better than I did in my twenties. I have tons of energy and am loving life. Before I started Paleo and Crossfit, I was on medication for high cholesterol, heartburn and Insulin resistance. Within 3 months, I was able to stop taking all of them. In one year, my cholesterol dropped 80 points, my Triglycerides dropped 104 points and my fasting blood sugar went from Pre-Diabetic to normal levels.
I am so grateful to Nick and Rebecca for pushing me to do more than I ever thought I could. They motivate me to do things I never thought I would be able to. A good friend describes my journey as going from overweight to an athlete. I had never thought of it that way, but she was right on.
I LOVE CrossFit…love it. It’s more than a workout…it has literally changed my life. It’s a family with great coaches and great friends cheering me on every day. This is so much more than diet and exercise. It is a whole new lifestyle for me. I am never going back. Life is so much better than I ever thought it could be.
To anyone who thinks they can’t do it, I say…of course you can. You need lots of determination and commitment. Set your mind to it and don’t look back. Push forward no matter how hard it seems. Even if you only make a little progress one day, push even harder the next day. You will be surprised at how far it will take you.
