I am already in great shape! Do I need Elements?

That’s great if you already have a good fitness foundation, but have you been doing kettle bell swings, burpees, and dead lifts on a regular basis? There are foundation movements specific to CrossFit that you must learn before you are allowed to jump into our fast paced group classes. Join our Elements program at any of out locations or start with personal training to help develop these movements.

However, if you have been CrossFiting at a different location for three months or longer you are okay to skip our Elements program.

How can I compete in the CrossFit Games?

If you are interested in competing in CrossFit as a sport, we have trainers and athletes here that have competed at the highest level.  Ute CrossFit is the home of HacksPack the 2012 and 2013 CrossFit Games Affiliate Cup Champions!!  In 2013, for the first time in the history of the Games, Ute CrossFit had two teams (HacksPack and Ute Allstars) compete at the CrossFit Games.  Every year we have sent athletes  to compete in the CrossFit Games. We would be happy to talk with you more about training with us for the games.

Can I bring my kids?

In general, if your children are at the age that they can be left unsupervised they are welcome to come and site quietly in a designated seating area.  We do offer Daycare Classes and Kid’s Camps at one or more of our locations.  At Ute CrossFit East Draper we have a designated kid area located within the gym.  Children are not allowed in the workout area at any time for their safety and the safety of others.

Do you do nutrition consultations?

Yes! If you need some extra help with nutrition or are a committed athlete that wants to take your performance to the next level then feel free to contact Rebecca Ballstaedt at Ute CrossFit East Draper.

At Ute CrossFit we are committed to helping you reach your goals. Unfortunately, exercise can only get you so far in trying to attain these goals! This is why at Ute CrossFit training hard and good nutrition go hand in hand. Our trainers are not only passionate about crossfit and getting you in killer shape, but also about how you are treating your body outside of the gym. We encourage everyone to train smart, clean up their eating habits, and get adequate recovery and sleep. We do gym nutrition and training challenges on a regular basis to keep you accountable and help you reach your goals.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.

Thousands of athletes worldwide have followed our workouts posted daily on this site and distinguished themselves in combat, the streets, the ring, stadiums, gyms and homes.

We also publish the CrossFit Journal, designed to support the CrossFit community detailing the theory, techniques, and practice by our coaches in our gym, in essence bringing your garage or gym into ours, making you a part of the CrossFit family.

We offer seminars, trainer certifications, and training and regularly provide consultation services to athletic teams, coaches, and police and military agencies throughout the free world.

I am from out of town. Do you allow drop-ins?

Yes!  Drop-ins are always welcome at any of our locations.  We would love to see you.  Our drop-in rates are:

$20 for a WOD

$25 for a WOD and a t-shirt

$55 for a week pass and a t-shirt

See you soon!!

I am worried about lifting weights. Won’t I bulk up and lose flexibility?

No! CrossFit will not make you big and bulky. This is a common misconception despite the surplus of information that points to the contrary.  Talk to any of our members or do some of your own research and you will see success story after success story of people getting in great shape, gaining lean mass, and losing weight – while not looking like body builders!

I am not a an athlete and I am out of shape. Is CrossFit for me?

Yes! We have members from a variety of different backgrounds – some who have never picked up a barbell and some who played collegiate level sports. That is the great thing about the crossfit community and programming – it will meet and challenge you at whatever level of fitness you are at. There is always room for improvement. We also train you like you are an athlete, and you will be surprised at the things you are able to accomplish after a few months of training with us! Looking good and feeling better is just an added bonus of training hard with Ute CrossFit.

Why supplements?

Everybody can benefit from the right supplements.  That doesn’t mean you need a pharmacy in your cupboard to be healthy, but there are a few that are necessary due to the changing of the molecular make-up of our food these days.  If you only take 1 supplement, take fish oil, and make sure it is omega 3 not omega 6 or 9 (humans get plenty of 6 and 9 but most have very low levels of omega 3 fats). Fish oil has been shown to improve brain function, prevents cancer, reduces inflammation in the body, improves heart and cardiovascular health, improve cholesterol levels and prevent heart attack, and has been shown to decrease development of mental illnesses.  We recommend and sell fish oil supplements from Stronger Faster Healthier (SFH) Nutrition.  It is as pure as any other brands we have found, and is a affordable as most cheap fish oil supplements from costco or wal-mart (which are garbage).

Other supplements we sell and endorse are whey protein supplements.  Whey protein is not necessary for everyone, but for people who workout intensely 3-5 times per week it can be hard to get enough protein in the diet to “feed the machine.”  A good whey protein can be an easy way to fix that problem.  We make protein shakes/smoothies, homemade protein muffins, and also sprinkle it over oatmeal in the mornings.  A very easy protein shake is 1/2 cup coconut milk, 1 scoop protein powder, 1 banana, 1/2 cup water, and ice.  We get our protein from SFH nutrition for two reasons.  One is that it is guaranteed to come from grass fed beef, which means that the cows who produce are healthy and are not eating a steady diet of corn.  The other reason is that we don’t like to eat foods with a ton of preservatives or additives.  SFH’s Pure Whey has about 4 ingredients in it and they use Stevia as a sweetener which is the best non glycemic sweetener we’ve seen up to this point.  If we can count the ingredients in a protein powder on one hand that’s pretty darn good.

Some other supplements that can be beneficial to athletes (*this is our list, there are many other opinions out there and we are not doctors, take this for what it is…an opinion) are: magnesium (balance out calcium magnesium and helps with sleep), vitamin D (unless you live near the equator you are probably deficient at least part of the year), vitamin B12 (combat adrenal fatigue.  most pill forms don’t get absorbed very well however), and for people looking to put on size and get much stronger creatine and beta alanine combined are quite effective (although we don’t take either because it isn’t necessary for our training goals).

For more information on SFH read the following:
SFH (Stronger Faster Healthier) was founded in March 2010 as a separate division of the Maine Natural Health Co and is dedicated to developing products that allow athletes to be stronger, faster and healthier. Maine Natural Health was founded in 2006 by Jeff Leighton who has decades of experience in the study of chronic disease. We have used his knowledge to design and develop natural products that have a positive effect on your health and well being.

Our key products are: Omega-3 Oil + Whey Protein

Our clinical grade liquid Omega-3 Oils comes in five flavors (4 grams of EPA/DHA per 2 teaspoons) and we have seven different High-Grade, Low-Glycemic Whey Protein formulas for all ages and athletic abilities. Both products are from natural sources; our omega-3 oil comes from finely processed fish oil from Scandinavia, which is 3rd party tested and free of PCBs and our whey protein is derived from grass-fed cattle. Used together, these products will contribute to your overall health by reducing inflammation and increasing muscle mass.

The rigors of athletic training quite naturally induce inflammation and affect the health of every cell in the body. Inflammation actually decreases muscle mass/strength and can induce chronic pain. Furthermore, intense workouts can make your cell’s energy starved and this is where supplements play a role in your recovery. Our bodies cannot keep up with energy production during intense exercise periods. Recovery from exercise takes longer than just feeling rested. A sense of being rested occurs hours to days before our cells have recovered. A good supplement must bring our cells back to normal quickly and restore cellular energy. This is why SFH designed our Post Work Out Formula. Further, to function optimally we must develop and maintain strong, lean muscles without fatty deposits. Not everyone can eat lean protein every meal therefore we developed a range of clean protein supplements that do not increase fatty deposits in your muscles.

High dose liquid fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory. SFH fish oil has now been proven through clinical studies to reduce pain and inflammation as well as a host of disease related problems from high triglycerides to cardiac arrhythmia, asthma and certain brain related disorders such as bipolar disease, depression and ADHD. Our Oils only come in liquid form for rapid absorption and we recommend that everyone take a minimum of 4 grams per day.

Our core products emphasize the treatment of “silent” and established inflammation and on muscle development to enhance metabolic rate, increase energy, manage weight and improve recovery rates from exercised induced activities. The Mission of the SFH (Stronger Faster Healthier) / Maine Natural Health is to apply science to the design, clinical testing, and commercialization of natural products that benefit wellness, fitness and treat established disease. This is our core competency and distinguishes us from other nutrition companies that are based almost exclusively on marketing products with unsubstantiated claims.
